Camino Cats Make Their Escape- Process

Hey! I forgot how completely awesome process threads are. Luckily, Jay Ryan and Aaron Horkey stepped up and did an amazing one, and made me realize- oh yeah, I’m stupid for not doing this more.

Those cats are really, really bad. I had the general idea for this a few months back and once I sat down to start drawing it, it went in a slightly different direction than I started. I really didn’t plan on putting a shark back there, but I was leaving that space blank for SOMETHING, and then I thought what would cats want more than an aquarium full of fish. And THEN I thought a GIANT fish in the tank would be funnier. AND THEN I thought a shark is the most awesome fish in the world. And, once you think of a shark in a tiny tank, you can’t help but think of Damien Hirst.

Philosophy and the Art of Second Editions- Drymounted.com Giant Tim Doyle Interview

A couple of weeks ago, Derek over at Drymounted.com had an open call to his readers for questions to be posed to me, with the top few questions that got the most votes would get answered.  But because I love to hear my own voice, I said I’d answer them all.  So, reprinted with permission, here is way more information than you wanted to know about me-

1. What advice can you give to artists starting to market their work on the internet? Which artists inspire you to create new drawings and designs?

Step one- do art. Step three- profit.

I wish I could say- do x,y,z and that will bring you fame and fortune. But man, there is no method. If I hadn’t learned every aspect of the business side of things while curating the Alamo’s poster series WHILE ALSO spending way too much time learning how to draw and print, WHILE ALSO building up a ton of contacts along the way, I wouldn’t even be at my meager position. There is no set way to go about it- but one thing I can’t emphasize enough- cover your ass. Learn the business end of things, and just hammer away at it. Don’t settle for what other people give you- you have to carve your own chunk out of the beast. That’s my motto, I guess- don’t settle. Get out there and take.

As far as what artists inspire me- I think my influences are pretty evident. I’ve been a comics junkie for decades now, and that shows pretty heavily in my work. Building the Alamo series exposed me to a bunch of new artists and guys like Tyler Stout were a big influence. Seeing his work was like seeing a new way how to draw- a new problem my brain just had to solve. I’ve definitely spun off in my own direction over the last year or so, but that was a starting point, to be sure.

Intergalactic Nemesis Video up-

Instead of me EXPLAINING what The Intergalactic Nemesis Trans-Media comic book / Live Action Graphic Novel I’m drawing is…

I’m going to save about 10 mins of talking and just SHOW you-

The script is by Jason Neulander and Co, and I’m doing all the drawing!  This particular chapter was colored by Paul Hanley.

The actors and Buzz Moran on sfx bring the script to LIFE on stage.  The whole thing is set to debut at the Long Center for the Performing Arts here in Austin TX over Labor Day!

Now…I just have to actually finish drawing it…scary.

The video you just saw was pt2, but pt1 is on the other side of this JUMP!

Appleseed Cast / Low Level Owl poster and art print-

The Appleseed Cast is a killer band out of Kansas, and I got the chance to do the poster for their Austin Texas show on last Saturday (2/27/10).

And since I loved the image so much, I also released it as a text-less art print!

The Intergalactic Nemesis Print/ Comic Available

For those of you not following me on TWITTER or FACEBOOK, or even the new web-app that lets you stare at me as I sleep, you might not know that I’m doing all the art chores on the trans-media comic/play/ live-action Graphic Novel, The Intergalactic Nemesis!

Issue one is already drawn and printed, Issue two is at the printer’s right now, and I’m wrapping up the last few pages on issue 3.  Coming this Labor Day, the entire live action play/ comic presentation will be performed at the 2400 seat Long Center for the performing arts here in Austin!  This is a really big deal, and I gotta be honest, it kinda scares the crap out of me!  I mean, there’s going to be 1000’s of people experiencing this story through my visuals.  That’s a lotta nuts.

Here’s a snapshot of what this is going to be like, but on a smaller scale, as chapter one was performed at the Alamo Drafthouse a few weeks back-

Hello Bully Benefit Prints now available

Pit bull rescue is something near and dear to my heart. Between me and my wife, we’ve rescued well over a dozen stray and abandoned cats and dogs from the East Austin neighborhoods where we’ve lived over the years.

On one occasion, we found a Pit Bull/ Lab mix wandering a warehouse complex North of San Antonio. We took him in, and tried to find his owner, to no avail. So, we got his shots up to date, and eventually decided to keep him in our small house…with no yard. That was a big mistake. This VERY energetic and affectionate dog was just too much for our meager living space, and our very, very put-out cats. BUT- certainly we could find a home for Magneto, right?

Print for Black Cat Bones Gallery’s Superhero show-

Detail from- "Batalla en la Esquina de Ditko y Kirby"

Black Cat Bones Gallery in Puebla, Mexico has asked me back to be a part of their Superhero art show.  I had previously created the sold-out  ‘En Los Arboles’ print for their Twin Peaks tribute.

If anyone knows me, they know I love me some super-heroes.  So when the opportunity came up for me to participate, I took the hidden pole down to my secret lair  and banged this out  (now, that just sounds dirty).

Biff, Bam, Pow- Superheroes Aren’t Just for Kids Anymore!

He-Man prints at Gallery1988

At Gallery 1988 right now, they have 4 new prints by me up in their “Under the Influence: He-Man” art show.  Any unsold prints will be available from me directly in my Store through Nakatomi Inc!

Who doesn’t love He-Man.  I sure do.  Well, to be clear- I love the IDEA of He-Man…the show was PRETTY ROUGH.  But as far as the toys and character designs were, He-Man had it all.  How awesome was the removable armor?  And Stinkor?  A toy that smelled bad on PURPOSE?   It even had a creepy S&M style slime pit to tie up your figures and ‘slime’ all over them.

Kinky.
